August 10, 2009
Consolidated Edison (ConEd) announced Friday it had filed the first phase of applications for smart grid stimulus funds from DOE. The New York City IOU asked for about $172 million to help fund smart grid projects in the service areas of ConEd and subsidiary Orange & Rockland Utilities.
ConEd will apply later this month for $33 million in stimulus funds smart grid demo portions of an overall smart grid program the parent firm expects to cost about $410 million. The plan was approved by state regulators (SGT, Jul-27).
If approved, the utility said it will use the money to cut the carbon footprint and boost energy efficiency; enhance the detection of electric grid disruptions as they happen; boost the number of intelligent systems that can monitor, isolate and correct distribution problems to improve reliability and save money, and boost the number of smart building technologies that can show customers their energy use by appliance.
ConEd plans to enhance its smart meter infrastructure and add over 40,000 smart meters system wide.
The firm last week announced plans spend $6 million on a smart grid pilot program in northwest Queens, a New York City borough affected an infamous blackout three years ago.
